Have you been to Wye House?

Have you visited the Wye House Amenity Area yet? We would like to promote the facilities both to visitors and residents alike.

In the centre of the grounds is a lovely lawn surrounded by gardens perfect for a family picnic, as well as a natural pond that acts as a great wildlife habitat. If you have young children, try the toddlers play area where parents can sit and enjoy the atmosphere while the children play. When visiting the children’s play area you might notice some stone pillars, which look oddly out of place in the gardens. These are supposedly the original pillars from the 19th Century Town Hall and which were rescued from the demolition of the building following a fire. Another interesting ruin is the stone and flint archway, which seems strangely to lead into the pond. Whether this is genuinely historic, or a modern folly has yet to be determined.

While visiting the gardens, please be aware that all of the housing is private property and should be treated respectfully (only the gardens, play area and pond are public amenity). Consequently, we ask that visitors follow some polite requests:

1. Access to the gardens from Barn Street should be via the gated path not the larger vehicle entrance, which is private property.

2. Bicycles should not be ridden on the permissive paths through the gardens.

3. Please do not allow your dog to foul the path or gardens. These are public gardens and must be treated with respect. Dog waste bags are available free of charge from the Council Offices and can be disposed of in ordinary waste bins.

The Wye House Amenity Area is open from 9.00am until dusk all year round and is situated between Barn Street and Kelham Gardens.
